Story of Narcissus

The story of Narcissus, a figure from Greek mythology, is a tale of vanity and self-obsession. According to the myth, Narcissus was a young man of extraordinary beauty, admired by many. However, he showed disdain and indifference to those who loved him.

Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, decided to punish Narcissus for his arrogance and indifference. She lured him to a pool of water, where he saw his own reflection for the first time. Narcissus did not realize it was merely an image and became infatuated with the reflection. Unable to leave the allure of his image, he eventually realized that his love could not be reciprocated and died at the site, overcome by sorrow and unfulfilled desire.

The story symbolizes the pitfalls of self-obsession and vanity. Narcissus' inability to see beyond his own reflection serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of self-absorption and the importance of recognizing and responding to the needs and feelings of others. After his death, a flower sprang up where he died, bearing his name - the narcissus.
